As of spring 2008, the initial phase of HEH's Gatineau Health Center project has been completed. Led by Dr. Katie Wolf, a fullscale community resource and needs assessment was conducted utilizing interviews and community meetings in 16 villages within our catchments area. It was discovered that 86% of people living in this extremely impoverished region of Haiti are unable to access health care due to lack of money, and of the few that are able to seek emergency or other medical care, 100% must either borrow money or sell off livestock or a portion of their land to pay their medical bills. One resident revealed, "We can find money for a casket, but not for illness." Another concluded, "From a standpoint of health, it is a catastrophe for us here." Most importantly, HEH learned which health center elements are most critically needed; basic primary care services, maternity services, including emergency obstetric care, and community education programs led by local health agents.
